W. A. Johnson Is Buried Today
Last rites for William "Alf" Johnson, 72, who died late Monday night, March 3,
at his home in Eel River township, were held this afternoon, Thursday, at 2 o'clock
at the Eel River Baptist Church with Revs. Frank Young and Roy Ballard officiating.
Burial was in the Riverview cemetery. The Sonday Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Surviving him are his widow, Eva;
three sons, Herman and Howard Johnson at home and Arthur Johnson of Flint, Mich.;
nine daughters, Mrs. Elmer Goheen, Mrs. Donald Guillaume and Mrs. Edwin Strahm
all of Fort Wayne, and Blanche, Gladys, Mary, Irma, Lillian and Evelyn, all at home;
12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two brothers, George Johnson of
Churubusco and Simon H. Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was one of Allen county's outstanding farmers and citizens and always
took a great interest in the Churubusco community.
He was born in Eel River township and when he grew to young manhood he entered
the teaching profession, serving as a teacher in Eel River township for 11 terms.
Then in 1894 he was elected trustee of Eel River township and served until 1900.
From 1903 to 1907 he was clerk of Allen County the only four years that he lived
away from his native township.
He continued his interest in the Democratic party and served as county Democratic chairman.
He was a member of the local Masonic lodge and was associated with the Exchange Bank
here from 1915 until 1929, serving eight years of that time as its president.
In 1931 Allen county commissioner Charles Miller of Eel River township died and
Mr. Johnson was appointed to fill his place.
At the next election he was elected and served on the board of commissioners
from 1931 to 1940, acting as its president in 1939.
At the time of his death he was president of the Allen County Farmers Mutual

Mrs. W. A. Johnson, 82, Allen County Resident, Dies Today
Death Occurs At Home Near Churubusco
Mrs. W. A. Johnson, 82, a resident of Eel River township, Allen county,
died at 3:05 a.m. Saturday at her home three and one-half miles east of Churubusco.
She had been in failing health for the past several years but had only been confined to her bed
for the last two days.
She was a native of Eel River township, and was born on February 26, 1874, a daughter
of Joseph and Mary Brown Parks.
In the year 1891 she was united in marriage to W. Alf Johnson.
They started housekeeping on a farm in Eel River township where they spent
their entire married life.
Mr. Johnson died fifteen years ago today.
The surviving relatives include three sons,
Herman Johnson near Churubusco;
Arthur Johnson, Flint, Mich.;
Russell H. Johnson, Fort Wayne;
daughters, Mrs. Elmer Goheen, Mrs. Mary Conner, Mrs. Donald Guillaume, Mrs. Edwin Strahm,
Mrs. Kenneth Stonebraker, Mrs. George Sansom, all of Fort Wayne;
Miss Blanche Johnson and Miss Irma Johnson, both at home;
Miss Gladys Johnson of Churubusco;
and twenty-four great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons.
The body has been removed to the Sonday Funeral Home and will be returned to the Johnson
residence where friends may call.
Funeral plans will be announced later.
Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery south of Churubusco.
